Happy Tuesday!!
Today in math, we worked on finishing up the math work from yesterday with the substitute teacher! We learned a new strategy for division called repeated subtraction. Students learned that to solve a question such as 36/9, they can subtract 9 until they are left with zero to find the answer. To practice this skill, students paired up in groups of 2 and practiced teaching their partner how to use this strategy as if their partner had never seen it before. Teaching somebody else is an excellent way to learn and practice a skill!
In language arts, students were given a "Roll a Story" paper where they rolled a dice 3 times which gave them the character, setting and problem for their story. We will be continuing to work on these stories for a few more days this week.
In science today, we did some tests on the wagons we began creating last week using a wheel and axle. Students tested out 4 different types of wheels (square, triangle, circle wheel with axle not in the middle, and regular wheel and axle) to test out which type of wheel was the most effective. Students learned that in order to reduce friction and make the wagon roll smooth and efficiently, the wheels need to be round and the axle must be attached in the middle.
