WOW! It was an exciting day today for the grade 3/4 students at the Shepard Landfill and Composting Facilities! We had a full day of learning and fun with our tour guide Clayton. He made our day extra special by setting the kids off on an imaginary mission where the students were being trained to become secret agents of "waste diversion." Clayton set the tone for the day by telling the kids they were not supposed to be there and they had to sneak around, being careful to not be spotted by the secret agents!

In the morning, we spent our time on the bus taking a tour through the landfill site where the waste is sorted, salvaged, and disposed of using amazing technology. Student's learned about some of the ways our city puts in effort to reducing our waste by picking things out that can be reused or salvaged for valuable parts.

After lunch, we had some time in the classroom to learn about how to compost organic waste. Students were tasked to sort different types of waste into the appropriate categories. We also took a tour through the composting building where students saw the process of how organic waste is turned into "black gold" or valuable soil.

Ask your student to tell you about all of the wonderful things they learned and how they are going to use their training to help our planet with waste management!
